Technical reference schematic. Structural proportions, coloration, and surface detail are represented diagrammatically for clarity. This is not an artist's rendering of the living organism.
Communication System
01
Syntax Layer
Primary Public Channel
Ultrasound Pulses
Clicks, pings, and screeches generated by the head. These pulses carry the grammatical skeleton of every Sa utterance — sentence structure, subject–object relations, and propositional content. Analogous to spoken words and grammar. Functions concurrently as echolocation. Range and clarity vary by water conditions.

Semantic Layer
Concurrent Public Channel
Chromatophore Display
Rapid color and pattern shifts across the chromatophore-packed midsection skin, produced simultaneously with ultrasound. Color carries gross emotional state; pattern carries cultural meaning, nuance, and individual voice — analogous to vocal timbre. Patterns can encode learned symbols of extraordinary precision, as demonstrated at the end of Book 1 and in ZenSa door-codes. Public discourse requires both channels operating together.

03
Intimate Layer
Private Channel · 3rd Appendage Contact
Neural Mind-Meld
Direct neural interface through contact of the 3rd appendage — to the immediate left of the abdominal mouth. Comprehensive, unambiguous, and entirely private between participants. Used for intimate relationships, highly precise technical exchange, and final resolution of meaning. Equivalent to sharing consciousness briefly. Considered deeply personal; not offered casually.
The three tiers operate concurrently during complex discourse. Sound provides the skeleton; chromatophore display provides the flesh; mind-meld provides the marrow. Public Sa communication operates on tiers 1 and 2. Tier 3 belongs to close bonds and privileged private communication. The Sa describe color-displays as carrying "meaning" and sound as carrying "structure," which may reflect the evolutionary order of the two systems.
Chromatophore Color Grammar
Color carries gross emotional state; pattern carries nuance, cultural resonance, and individual voice.

Pattern layers above color: individual voice, cultural symbol, and deliberate learned symbols (KanSa peace-sign in Book 1; ZenSa door-codes in Book 2) carry meaning color alone cannot convey. A Sa expressing rage may produce identical color states while individual pattern remains as distinctive as a fingerprint or a voice.
The Sa evolved in the deep oceans of the Terminus system, where high-pressure, low-light conditions drove development of full-spectrum 360° photoreception and high-resolution ultrasound perception far beyond human capability. The chromatophore communication system is believed to predate ultrasound as the primary channel, with ultrasound syntax layering atop an older semantic substrate — which may explain why Sa themselves describe color-display as carrying "meaning" and sound as carrying "structure." The ComSa organism (5th appendage, distal) is never removed voluntarily; its loss is considered catastrophic and may be fatal to the symbiont. Sa can survive brief periods out of water but find it deeply uncomfortable; air-breathing is avoided when possible.
