They have watched from the ocean depths for generations, riding whales, cataloguing every living thing, mourning every extinction. The alien Sa have a plan for Earth. They call it Terminus. Humanity has no idea it's already in motion.
"How inappropriate to call this planet Earth when it is quite clearly ocean."
— Arthur C. ClarkeNew: Terminus Chaos, Book 2, is up for pre-order. Releases December 15, 2026.
"The life of man is of no greater importance to the universe than that of an oyster."
— David HumeThe Book
In the dying waters of the Southern Ocean, the alien BanuSa glides on the back of a humpback whale, a secret ritual she has indulged for years. Her species, the Sa, arrived on Earth long ago as explorers. What they found was a planet of extraordinary beauty, and a dominant species systematically destroying it.
"What Terminus meant for the primary species of this planet was too hard to contemplate, much less justify, but humans could not be allowed to destroy this oasis in an otherwise mostly barren section of the galaxy."
Terminus is the Sa's plan to resolve the human problem. And it is already in motion.
"If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn't turn out well for the Native Americans."
— Stephen HawkingArmy physician and combat veteran Dr. Trey Ocean is trying to outrun his ghosts in a world on the edge, war-scarred, ocean-sick, and quietly unraveling. When Terminus is executed, his world is shattered overnight. Civilization, as humanity knew it, ends.
But in the wreckage, something unexpected emerges. And Trey's missing daughter Hope may hold the key to everything that comes next, including a far darker threat hurtling toward Earth from the stars.
The Ocean family is not what it appears. A hidden connection to the Sa — rooted in Trey's tragic past — will determine whether anything survives what comes next.
Terminus delves into the depths of human darkness — and the heights of our capacity to love.

Inside the Novel
Environmental Collapse
The Sa's horror at humanity's destruction of Earth's oceans is both warning and indictment, and the trigger for everything that follows.
First Contact
Stranded on Earth when their homeworlds fell to an interstellar invader, the Sa engineered a hybrid human species — the HumanSo — to walk among us and steer humanity away from self-destruction. When that effort failed, a darker solution became inevitable.
War & Sacrifice
Trey's combat service in Afghanistan casts a long shadow. The novel explores the cost of service on the people who carry it home.
Family & Hope
At its heart, Terminus is a father-daughter story. Trey's search for Hope across a shattered world is the novel's moral compass.
Moral Complexity
The Sa are neither villains nor saviors. Their impossible choice forces both characters and readers to question the value of a species.
Cosmic Threat
Extinction is not the final chapter. The Chaos Beings who destroyed the Sa homeworlds are already en route to Earth.
"We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet."
— Stephen HawkingBook 2
Twenty-three years after the Red Eye plague nearly erased humanity, Earth is rebuilding. Trey Ocean is President of the United States of Earth (USE). Humans, the hybrid HumanSo, and the alien aquatic Sa share a strained, hard-won peace. For the first time in a generation, humanity dares to hope.
Millions of Sa refugees, fleeing conquered worlds, race toward their last bastion of safety: planet Earth. They were followed.
The resource-hungry Tuurbaa, the predators the Sa call Chaos Beings, have already conquered the three Sa homeworlds. Bred for conquest, Tuurbaa scout leader Blaatoo craves martial glory, ascension in the hive, and a planet full of prey. Blaatoo launches a reconnaissance in force, plunging the recovering human cities of Annapolis and Baltimore into darkness. His squad has two objectives: gather intelligence for the coming hive invasion and hunt down humanity’s leader.
With power dead and communications silenced, Earth’s defense falls to whoever is still willing to resist. Federation Marine Lieutenant Hope Ocean is a HumanSo assigned to defend her father while carrying her first child. Zuri Fleet is an orphaned citizen-soldier holding a barricade with a crossbow against monsters with plasma weapons. Admiral Mia Stokes is the one-handed fleet commander her sailors call the Handless Huntress, who fights back from the deck of a three-masted frigate from the age of sail. KanSa, a gentle Sa, once committed an act her people consider unthinkable, and she may be compelled to do it again. And not every human will stand with humanity.
Terminus Chaos, Book 2 in the Terminus series, returns to an Earth still recovering from genocide. For centuries, the alien Sa lived hidden in Earth’s oceans, until human-induced climate change and nuclear proliferation forced them to act in self-preservation. When their attempt to manage the “human problem” through a hybrid force of agents called HumanSo failed, the Sa unleashed the Terminus virus, the plague humans call the Red Eye, and reset human civilization. Now the three dominant species on Earth must see beyond their painful history and stand together against a new existential threat to their only home.
From the streets of the USE capital in Annapolis to the orbiting HumanSo space habitat, Scully Station, Terminus Chaos is a relentless story of alien invasion, military grit, and the price of defending a world that has already survived the end once.

The concluding chapter of the Terminus trilogy. A generation after Terminus remade the world, the Sol system's human, HumanSo, and Sa alliance faces its defining choice: wait for the Tuurbaa to return, or carry the war to them. Terminus Hope is the story of what happens when Earth decides it is done waiting.
In DevelopmentAbout the Series
The Terminus series spans an epic arc from first contact and planetary catastrophe to interstellar war. Book 1 follows the execution of Terminus and its devastating aftermath. Book 2, Terminus Chaos, picks up twenty-three years later, when the predatory Tuurbaa follow fleeing Sa refugees to Earth and scout leader Blaatoo plunges Annapolis and Baltimore into darkness, forcing humans, HumanSo, and Sa to stand together or fall. Book 3, Terminus Hope, will bring the trilogy to its conclusion, centering on Hope Ocean, the girl who grew up on a remade Earth and became something far greater. The series blends military thriller authenticity with hard science fiction, environmental urgency, and deeply human stories of family, sacrifice, and resilience.

A Reader's Companion
I write the way I practiced medicine: grounded in evidence, honest about uncertainty, and rigorous about the line between what we know and what we are extrapolating. The technology in the Terminus trilogy is not invented convenience. It is disciplined speculation, built on real physics, real biology, and real military design. As the author, I take the science seriously so you, the reader, can also.
The time spent describing that technology in the novels can be distracting — but it enriches the story's texture. These reference plates exist for readers who want to go deeper: visual and diagrammatic representations of the ideas driving the story, so the science can inform your reading rather than interrupt it.

About the Author
Trip Buck is the pen name of Chester Buckenmaier III, MD, a retired Army Colonel, anesthesiologist, and author of Terminus. Across two combat deployments, Balad, Iraq in 2003 and Camp Bastion, Afghanistan in 2009, he pioneered advanced regional anesthesia techniques that produced the first published accounts of continuous peripheral nerve blocks and acute pain management in forward combat environments.
The medical and combat details woven throughout Terminus are not invented. Buck writes what he has lived: the surgical suite under pressure, the moral weight of the firefight, the fragile triage of keeping someone whole enough to survive.
When he's not writing, Buck publishes a monthly editorial with USMedicine.com and sails with his wife out of Annapolis, Maryland. His three daughters, all grown, all sailors, have been his most steadfast supporters from the first page.
